Harrogate Theatre Announce Refurbishment Plans

Harrogate Theatre has announced plans to undergo a period of refurbishment this summer to transform the beautiful one hundred and six year old Victorian theatre.

This work will commence on 1 August and will see a complete redecoration of the Main Auditorium as well as all new seating being installed. Harrogate Theatre will then open their Winter Season on 30 October.

Since 2003 Harrogate Theatre has been fundraising with a view to transforming the beautiful Theatre on the corner of Oxford Street, to make it safe and comfortable for the many thousands who visit every year.

The people of Harrogate and District have been magnificent with their support and all those at Harrogate Theatre involved with the campaign have been genuinely taken aback by the generosity and affection shown for the Theatre.

Over the past three years approximately £900,000 has been raised, much of this has been spent on essential repair and maintenance of the building, however the Theatre is now in a position to embark upon a programme of refurbishing the areas of the theatre that are for public use. Phase One of this programme will be the Main Auditorium.

Between 1 August and 26 October 2007 a period of renovation will commence, which will include the redecoration of the stunning Victorian plasterwork and replacement of all the seating and carpets. Whilst this is taking place Harrogate Borough Council, who own the building, will also carry out essential structural improvements and servicing. For this to take place the Theatre will not be able to stage any performances on its main stage during this period.

Once the work is complete Harrogate Theatre can look forward to an exciting Winter Season that will see Harrogate Dramatic Society and The Harrogate St Andrews Players perform. The year will then climax with Harrogate Theatre’s traditional pantomime, which this year will be Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

David Bown, Harrogate Theatre Chief Executive said: “This is an exciting time for us and we all look forward to the many users of the Theatre and the audiences of Harrogate and District getting the building they deserve.”

Jim Clark, Harrogate Theatre Chairman added: “This restoration is a vital step in the continuing development of a valuable and much loved asset of Harrogate and District. I very much look forward to the re-opening of this great community venue”
